Music Inspired by Richard Dawkins

river_out_of_eden_coverRichard Dawkins is a great man. From the first book of his I picked up, River Out of Eden, to the last one I read, The Greatest Shown on Earth, I’ve never ceased to be amazed by how his passion of biology and his talent at articulating the grandeur of nature ooze out of every single page.

Dawkins is the person who helped me find my atheistic voices in the vocabulary of evolutionary biology. And for that I’ve dedicated many work of art to the great man. For instance, The Lost Cause was wholly inspired by the dozen of books on evolution penned by the man that I’ve read. Similarly, I have written Wikipedia articles on some of his books, such as River Out of Eden and The Ancestor’s Tale, to help guide those who are still searching for their voices.

Here, however, I collect music I have written that are inspired by Dawkins’ work.

We are Made of Stars, subtitled “The Story of RNA”, was one of the first, written in 2006. Not only was it a tribute to Carl Sagan, but more importantly it tells the hypothesis of the RNA World which posits that RNA was the precursor to all current life on Earth. The lyric for this vocal music can be found on Vocal Music from 2006 and 2007.

Climbing Mount Improbable was a short piece written in 2007 to celebrate Dawkins’ book, Climbing Mount Improbable, of the same name. This is an often overlooked book, shadowed by his more-often-cited ones such as The Selfish Gene and The Extended Phenotype. The winding melody ascends and descends slowly and gracefully, following the contour of the Mount Improbable. Originally written for violin and piano, this piece was rearranged for clarinet and piano for my brother’s wedding.

Eternal Bliss was originally written in 2007 for violin and piano, named Noodly Appendages of the FSM (Flying Spaghetti Monster). The violin/piano duet score can be found here. Reading by Yonah Zur and Blair McMillen was recorded. I soon added a cello part to it, and rearranged it for clarinet trio, for my brother’s wedding. The clarinet trio was performed by Gilad Harel, Alistair MacRae & Wei-En Hsu.

Edit War in Wikidom was written in 2007, for violin, viola and cello. This short piece is reminiscent of my experiences editing Wikipedia articles, and comprises 3 mini battles. See for instance my contribution to the demise of most ancient common ancestor, and to the deletion of species integration.

Vocal Music from 2006 and 2007

These are some vocal music I wrote between 2006 and 2007, while attending Conrad Cummings’ evening music composition class at Juilliard. Some of these were sight-readings in class. One was performed at a bar.

Onward, Uncle Sam’s Soldiers was written in 2006 to commemorate a disaster.

We are Made of Stars, subtitled “The Story of RNA”, was written in 2006 as a tribute to Carl Sagan and as an illustration of the RNA World.  Lyric is included at the end of the article.

A House for the Feeble Minded was written in 2007, as a duet for tenor and baritone with piano accompaniment. Adapted from the short story ‘Profession’ by Isaac Asimov. Lyric is included at the end of the article.

Rearrangements as Gifts 2007-2010

Here are a few examples of music I rearranged as gifts for special occasions in the past. None of these are complex nor recorded. Sorry about the MIDI-quality mp3 files. I know they hurt your ears. They do mine, too.

Turn Your Eyes is a piano prelude music I extended slightly for Elisha in 2007.

You’ve got an Imaginary Friend in Jesus was rearranged in 2009 as a piano solo from James Taylor’s rendition of Carole King’s music, for Elisha. This one is a bit more elaborate, but probably needs some more tweaking.

I Wish You a Jingle Belly Christmas was rearranged in 2010 for my niece Sheryl Huang on her 7th birthday. It was a fun piece we could play together (cello and piano), mixing Jingle Bells with We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

Wedding Suite 2007 for Clarinet Trio and Brass Quintet

Ten years flew by. I can’t believe I wrote these so long ago. As I slowly migrate content from my once-defunct website fred-hsu.com/music/ to xinhaidude.com, I decided to start with the Wedding Suite.

The Wedding Suite 2007 includes clarinet trio pieces I wrote in the past, and brass quintet I wrote specifically for the wedding. The suite was performed at Krystina and Mike’s wedding on April 28th, 2007.  Clarinet trio recording was done a week before, performed by Gilad Harel, Alistair MacRae & Wei-En Hsu on April 20th, 2007.  The brass quintet rehearsal was recorded on April 26th, 2007, sight-read by Mike Blutman/Chris Venditti (trumpets), Kelly Csillam (horn), Nick Hagen (trombone) and Edward Vinson (tuba).

Sarabande from Bach Cello Suite 1 (BWV 1007)

This is one of the free and clean Bach cello music I am making available, as I transcribe them. See the parent article for context.

It is the shortest piece in the suites. Here is a clean sheet showing only notes. You can print it out and add your own bowing and fingering marks. Click on the image to go to the PDF file.

Following is my own markings. These most likely won’t work for you. I removed some double-stops that I couldn’t play well, and slightly changed durations of others. In general, I like how Yo-Yo Ma interpreted this one in Inspired by Bach. But note that he tuned his cello half step down to get a Baroque pitch of A415.

This is one of the free and clean Bach cello music I am making available, as I transcribe them. See the parent article for context.

This is one of the shortest pieces in the suites. So I transcribed it first. Here is a clean sheet showing only notes. You can print it out and add your own bowing and fingering marks. Click on the image to go to the PDF file.

Update from year-end 2023: I recorded my slow progress at year-end 2023. I dusted off my cello from a closet during the Christmas break, and practice enough such that I get some callus on my fingers. Just when my fingers are strong enough, I put the cello back in its closet. Sigh.

Clean and Free Sheet Music for Bach Cello Suites

clean-sheet-music-icon-rectangularI have over the years looked online for sheet music for Bach Cello Suites. It usually happened when I engaged in one of the annual holiday rituals in my household. This is where I brought my cello of out its cold storage, wiped dust off, and played it until I redevelop finger strength and rediscover the joy of growing callouses on my fingertips.

In the early days of the internet, one had to pay for this 300-year-old music. And usually lots of money got you poorly scanned copies of poorly printed scores. Nowadays the quality is better in general. In addition, good folks have been transcribing this music, and have uploaded them them for you to download, for free, such as this and this.

Some of these modern PDF files are full of transcription errors. Even with the professionally-typeset scores, most of the times bowing and fingering marks don’t work for me. Normally I would white out all markings from a downloaded score. Then I would write my own, on top of the notes. This was the only way I could play this beautiful music without making unpleasant sounds, given my poor skill set.

I imagine I am not the only one to want to do this. So I am going to start making these clean, unmarked sheet music available from now on, for free. I am transcribing them in Sibelius as I play them. At the rate I play, I may not be able to finish them all before I kick the bucket. But it’s still worth a try. It may help a soul or two. I’ll also post my own markings. They probably only work for myself. Use my markings if they help you. Ignore them if they annoy you.

HHAMS 2015 Field Pictures

This article shows pictures taken in 2015 at HHAMS (Hempstead Harbor Aero Modelers Society) field events. These pictures were processed after I posted 2016 field and plane pictures. Maybe I’ll get to 2014 pictures after this one.

The “winner picture” of the year 2015 was not taken by me. I don’t recall who sent me this picture. It was apparently exported at low resolution, unfortunately. If you are the photographer, please send me your original. The picture shows Eugene and Paul working on a plane in front of the shed.

Unusual Oculus Roomscale Setup

I have been patiently waiting for the day the era of Snow Crash arrived. I pre-ordered the consumer version in January, and got my Oculus Rift in June. While impressive, the lack of hand controllers relegated the Rift to a dark corner of my game room… until now.

A few weeks ago I received my Oculus Touch. And what a world of difference it made. I now proclaim the era of virtual reality to be upon us! The Touch is not just a pair of hand controllers. It is best described as “finger controllers”. And it brought with it more than 50 launch titles that made the Vive and its hand controllers look inadequate.

But Touch doesn’t work “as is” for me, sadly. It is designed primarily for people who sit on a desk against a wall, looking at the monitor. It works very well out of the box, if you use the Rift while standing behind where your chair normally is, looking in the direction of the monitor where your desktop PC is. The Oculus camera sensors are meant to stand on the desk, facing you.

You see, the thing is, I have a non-standard room setup. My man cave looks like nothing of the sort during the day when I roll up the shades. When the lights are off, however, a projector sitting atop the bookshelf projects the entire screen onto a white wall, across the room. My game PC lives in a corner of the bookshelf alongside other equipment, behind my recliner throne.
